Richard Hummel has over 14 years of experience in the intelligence field and is currently the Senior Threat Intelligence Manager for NETSCOUT's ASERT Team. Previously, he served as Manager and Principal Analyst atFireEye and iSIGHT Partners. He began his career as a Signals Intelligence Analyst with the United States Army. During the course of his service he became certified in Digital Network Intelligence and supported multiple operations overseas including a deployment to Iraq.

After departing from the Army as an enlisted soldier, he began contracting work as a Computer Network Operations analyst in support of the Army. During his tenure as a contractor, he developed many methods and procedures for conducting Cyber Discovery and trained analysts at Army INSCOM HQ's. At FireEye iSIGHT Intelligence, he led a team of technical analysts in the tracking, reporting, and analysis of various cyber crime related malware families.

Richard holds a Master of Science degree in Information Security Engineering with the SANS Technical Institute which he uses to lead a team focused on analyzing the DDoS Threat Landscape. His duties involve mentoring and leading a diverse team of senior and junior researchers performing big data analytics, machine learning, and threat analysis across a collection of global data to unearth adversary activity for the purposes of better protecting customers from worldwide threats.

Jim leads research on the security impact of the virtualized cloud, in the fixed and mobile core and at the enterprise edge. Jim focuses on the impacts of cloud-based technologies such as 5G from a cyberthreat detection perspective, as well as the business opportunities associated with delivering security capabilities via a managed services model.

Jim previously worked at Nortel Networks, where he tracked the VoIP and application server market landscape and was a key contributor to the development of Wireless Intelligent Network standards.

He gained additional technical experience at Bell Canada, where he performed IN and SS7 network planning, numbering administration, technical model forecast creation, and definition of regulatory-based interconnection models. Jim is based in Ottawa, Canada.
